Our Union:
I am convinced of the need for Unions and the need for people to participate. The principles of Unionism are as important today as they were when we first endeavoured to organize. |
Good and bad about the job:
I really enjoy being on the move. Seeing the Lower Mainland in all it's colours and glory year-round is immensely gratifying.
The traffic:
It's part of the job. I have learnt to expect the unexpected.
Likes and dislikes:
It exhausts me to hear endless complaints from passengers concerning events of which I have no control; such as running times, schedules, and rush hour traffic. What I like is that from one stop to the next you can be alternately praised for good timing and then berated for being terribly late...LOL.
The best thing:
The best thing about my job is (well, now that I have seniority) the variety of choices I have of work and days off.
The worst thing:
Is when you experience a random act of violence, and the company treats you as though it is your fault.
My job in the scheme of things:
The job is part of the infrastructure of my/our community enabling people to get from point A to point B.
A message to Translink riders:
If your bus is late, try to remember that something beyond the operators control has happened.
What my job involves:
My job needs me to maneuver a 40-60 ft. coach through busy streets that are crowded with other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists etc. to transport you, the rider, safely to your destination. All the while being alert to any other unforeseen incidents that could be transpiring and then to still find the time to read your maps and answer your questions.
Dealing with the public:
Openly
Memorable stories:
I had a regular elderly woman who would ride on my 106 line. One day she came up to me with a twinkle in her eye and said, "Seniors have the highest percentage of Aids!" I was afraid to say anything and especially I didn't want to offend her...I sputtered around for a while and then she said..."hearing Aids, walking Aids"...well I burst out laughing and said to her that she was my favorite and that I'd never forget her.
The value of Translink:
Unfortunately I don't see the value of Translink. I think by having Translink and then Coast Mountain Bus Company there is a real waste of money going on and why waste it when we could be expanding and improving service for our riders.
Hobbies:
History, the Great Outdoors, and sleeping...lol.
