CAW LOCAL 111
JOINS FIGHT FOR SAFETY LEGISLATION

Mounting concern over the safety of transit workers has prompted CAW Local 111 to take action. On June 13th, CAW Local 111 President Steve Sutherland and CAW Local 333 President Bill Young were in Ottawa, calling for all-party support on a Parliamentary motion that aims to protect transit operators from assault while on the job.
The motion, put forth by NDP Member of Parliament Peter Julian (Burnaby - New Westminster), extends to bus drivers and transit operators similar protections afforded to police and ambulance personnel by imposing stiffer penalties on anyone who assaults a bus driver or transit operator.
“This is a welcome initiative that we hope all parties in the House of Commons will support to reduce violence against transit operators” said Sutherland.
Julian is asking the government to amend the Criminal Code so judges can impose tougher sentences for assaulting Transit Operators.
Sutherland and CAW Local 333 President Bill Young met with Mr. Julian to discuss changes to the Criminal Code to provide the same penalties for assaulting Transit Operators that is now in place for Police Officers and Ambulance Workers.

Mr. Julian agreed, and on June 13, 2007 announced the following motion will be put to the Canadian Parliament:

“That, in the opinion of the House, the government should extend to Bus Drivers and Transit Operators, the same protections under the Criminal Code afforded to Police, and Ambulance Personnel, who are assaulted while performing their duties, by establishing stiff penalties for anyone who assaults a Bus Driver or A Transit Operator.”

The Locals 111 and 333 Presidents have met with over twenty Members of Parliament who have committed to support the legislated change. The Locals will continue to lobby MPs from all parties for their support.

The Locals also met with Representatives of the Amalgamated Transit Union, including Canadian Director Robin West. Brother West, who represents over 28000 transit workers across Canada, has committed his Union’s full support for this initiative.

We are encouraging everyone to help support this important legislation by filling out our Petition and forwarding it to their Member Of Parliament.
